Liberals Take Graffiti Fight to the Frontline Print E-mail
Saturday, 10 March 2007

NSW Opposition Leader and Shadow Minster for Western Sydney Peter Debnam, Liberal Candidate for Londonderry Bart Bassett, Liberal Candidate for Penrith Tricia Hitchen and Liberal Candidate for Mulgoa Karen Chijoff today took to the streets of Cambridge Park in their war on graffiti.

“As I have travelled around NSW one of the major issues which has been raised with me is that graffiti is destroying the amenity of the community,” Mr Debnam said.

“Once I have identified an issue, I believe in taking the action needed to address it; and that is why I am here in Cambridge Park today taking our fight on graffiti to the frontline,” he said.

“After 12 years of Labor’s softly-softly policing strategies, thugs know they can get away with vandalising people’s homes, local schools, churches and businesses because our hardworking police do not have the resources to combat the problem.

“A NSW Liberal/Nationals Government will deliver 1,720 additional police officers, meaning there are more police on the community’s streets, sending a strong message to thugs that they will be caught.

“Labor’s had long enough. I will fix the graffiti problem by ensuring there are enough police on the streets to stop offenders before they have a chance to vandalise the community.

“We need to intervene early to get the graffiti vandals back on the right track,” Mr Debnam said.

Mr Bassett said it’s important to show the community we are serious about addressing the graffiti problem by rolling up our sleeves and cleaning it off ourselves.

“I am sick and tired of seeing graffiti in our community. That is why I am here today with Peter Debnam and Western Sydney Liberals to tackle graffiti on the frontline,” Mr Bassett said.

Ms Hitchen said she would do all she could to fix the graffiti problem.

“I have already fought to get more police for Penrith and will be fighting our fair share of the 1720 new police the Liberals have announced.

Ms Chijoff said graffiti is a blight on our community and only encourages other forms of criminal activity.

“We need to clean up graffiti as quickly as possible,” Ms Chijoff said.
